The sponge is very hard when you receive it but after you put it in a bowl of warm water or maybe just in a sink of warm water it soaks up the water very quickly and becomes really soft and flexible and is ready for use after you squeeze out the extra water! The color is a very light green and I didn't notice any funny smell just that is very soft so I didn't have to worry about it being to rough for my face! Another great thing about this sponge is when you are using it on your face it feels  so soft and relaxing. After I have used my sponge on my face I gently squeeze my sponge to get the extra water out and hang it up on a little hook by my sink and let it air dry until the next morning!
